the first thing i do
in the morning
is to scan the classroom,
my pupils shifting left to right
before they finally land on
a grey jacket, slender fingers, a soft voice
greeting me, “good morning.”
i smile immediately and
my heart almost skips a beat;
my stomach flips and
i regret having breakfast;
my legs turn to jelly
as i walk to my seat.
but i don’t let my excitement show,
i return him a shy “good morning”.
