jelly – yet another poem

My legs are jelly,
Quivering and unsteady.
My arms lie useless by my side
Numbed
By my racing heart,
Sweat dripping down my face.
I am weak, and unsure,
And words escape me.
My eyes flutter open and shut, quickly,
Like a butterfly flapping its paper thin wings.

The girl steps forward, and I follow behind,
A wreck under my oversized hoodie.
I’m not quite sure what to say,
And I stammer out
“R-red please”,
It’s my favourite flavour of jelly.
