StAR Day 2024: Mr Lee Siak Cheong

Bonus question: Have any of your answers changed from your 2018 interview? (https://nushpress.com/2018/08/30/star-day-2018-mr-lee-siak-cheong/)

I can’t say my memory is crystal clear on the details, but after seeing the link, I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah, that sounds familiar!’ So, no changes to my answers—I’m sticking with my story!

1. It’s a normal day at work, before you get a call from your colleague. It’s an emergency. You need to come deal with your students ASAP. What trouble are they most likely to have gotten into?

Oh gosh! In this day and age, anything is possible…. I don’t think I need to add more to the list…

2. After taking care of the situation, you return to your desk and sigh deeply. If you had not become a teacher, you would now be _______ instead.

Not sure this is a trick question…. there are also numerous possibilities…..can go either better or worst… OR the same in education again 🙂

3. Never mind, you shrug off the stress from the morning and go to lunch. Where and what are you eating? And who are you eating with?

On school days, you can usually find me at the school canteen, enjoying my go-to meal: fishball bee hoon soup with beansprouts and a fried egg! 🙂 Whether I’m chatting with whoever’s around or having a solo, reflective moment at my favorite garden seat facing the bamboos and library, it’s my little oasis of deliciousness.

4. You are about to tuck into your meal when you notice a strand of hair in your food. Do you: A) Pick out the hair and eat the meal, it’s no big problem. B) Inform the store owner and get a replacement. C) Complain to your friend but pick out the hair and eat the meal anyway. D) Eat the hair. E) None of the above.

Aiyoh… My instinctive response is most likely A – after all, it’s just keratin (a type of protein, though we don’t usually eat it… yet). By the way, the SFA has approved 16 insects for consumption, so who knows what’s next?

5. After lunch, you return to continue your work. What task are you most dreading and/or what task are you most looking forward to?

Actually none of the above. Will be great if there’s a “power nap” period in the timetable of students and staff! 🙂

6. This is when you notice a strange letter placed on your desk. You open it and it says: I regret to inform you that you have been fired. Please clear your desk by next week. How do you feel?

Oh #$%&! Well, look on the bright side—I can finally actualize my dream of traveling around the world!

7. You turn the letter over… and it says “Just joking! Happy StAR Day! Thank you for all your hard work and the school will not be same without you!” How do you feel?

Oh #$%&! Lame joke—use your time more constructively and study for the upcoming exam! – Just joking too! Happy StAR Day – your potential is the sky!
