StAR Day 2024: Mr Seow Yongli

Bonus question: Have any of your answers changed from your 2018 interview?  (https://nushpress.com/2018/08/30/star-day-2018-mr-seow-yongli/)

Yes. For example, I now least fancy the prospect of being eaten alive by a bear.

1. It’s a normal day at work, before you get a call from your colleague. It’s an emergency. You need to come deal with your students ASAP. What trouble are they most likely to have gotten into?

Trauma from Physics questions. Else, I won’t be the best person to deal with it…

2. After taking care of the situation, you return to your desk and sigh deeply. If you had not become a teacher, you would now be _______ instead.

Dead. Probably died of hunger. Maybe a property agent, since i like to examine houses and their liveability.

3. Never mind, you shrug off the stress from the morning and go to lunch. Where and what are you eating? And who are you eating with?

That is a tough question with the choices around here. But the constant is the yakun teh that follows. Questioning life choices is best done alone…

4. You are about to tuck into your meal when you notice a strand of hair in your food. Do you: A) Pick out the hair and eat the meal, it’s no big problem. B) Inform the store owner and get a replacement. C) Complain to your friend but pick out the hair and eat the meal anyway. D) Eat the hair. E) None of the above.

A. In life, pick your battles. If it is something that 1) doesnt do much harm 2) is unintentional to begin with 3) is common and pretty much unavoidable… i’d be better off questioning life choices.

5. After lunch, you return to continue your work. What task are you most dreading and/or what task are you most looking forward to?

Look forward to: setting test/exam papers. Dread: marking test/exam papers.

6. This is when you notice a strange letter placed on your desk. You open it and it says: I regret to inform you that you have been fired. Please clear your desk by next week. How do you feel?

“Who still uses a hardcopy letter? Isn’t this usually done via email, or just by termination of their accounts?”

7. You turn the letter over… and it says “Just joking! Happy StAR Day! Thank you for all your hard work and the school will not be same without you!” How do you feel?

“Ok, i note that deadline was a joke. I will clear it by today so that the school won’t be the same again.”
