StAR Day 2024: Mr Toh Chen Yeong

Bonus question: Have any of your answers changed from your 2018 interview? (https://nushpress.com/2018/08/30/star-day-2018-mr-toh-chen-yeong/)

No, I have stood the test of time.

1. It’s a normal day at work, before you get a call from your colleague. It’s an emergency. You need to come deal with your students ASAP. What trouble are they most likely to have gotten into?

Excessive gaming coupled with lots of cursing and swearing during breaks.

2. After taking care of the situation, you return to your desk and sigh deeply. If you had not become a teacher, you would now be _______ instead.

A travel journalist.

3. Never mind, you shrug off the stress from the morning and go to lunch. Where and what are you eating? And who are you eating with?

I am having my comfort char siew + roasted pork rice with my regular lunch buddy/buddies.

4. You are about to tuck into your meal when you notice a strand of hair in your food. Do you: A) Pick out the hair and eat the meal, it’s no big problem. B) Inform the store owner and get a replacement. C) Complain to your friend but pick out the hair and eat the meal anyway. D) Eat the hair. E) None of the above.

A).

5. After lunch, you return to continue your work. What task are you most dreading and/or what task are you most looking forward to?

Although some meetings are necessary, I do not particularly enjoy them. I do enjoy assessing students’ project work as most tend to be done with much effort and creativity, due in part to project work having a higher CA weightage.

6. This is when you notice a strange letter placed on your desk. You open it and it says: I regret to inform you that you have been fired. Please clear your desk by next week. How do you feel?

I would want to know why I have been fired, although I am already secretly planning a much needed break before looking for my next job.

7. You turn the letter over… and it says “Just joking! Happy StAR Day! Thank you for all your hard work and the school will not be same without you!” How do you feel?

I instantly feel uplifted because words of affirmation and encouragement make my day.
