StAR Day 2024: Ms Ng Oon Hui

1. It’s a normal day at work, before you get a call from your colleague. It’s an emergency. You need to come deal with your students ASAP. What trouble are they most likely to have gotten into?

Likely someone got into an accident and is injured.

2. After taking care of the situation, you return to your desk and sigh deeply. If you had not become a teacher, you would now be _______ instead.

Doing interesting science research.

3. Never mind, you shrug off the stress from the morning and go to lunch. Where and what are you eating? And who are you eating with?

Home-cooked fried beehoon / noodles. Eating alone… cos my lunch is oftentimes just 5min. Don’t have time to have longer stretch of meals with colleagues. Also with all that happened, I prefer to wind-down and be alone for a while to re-energize myself for the next lesson.

4. You are about to tuck into your meal when you notice a strand of hair in your food. Do you: A) Pick out the hair and eat the meal, it’s no big problem. B) Inform the store owner and get a replacement. C) Complain to your friend but pick out the hair and eat the meal anyway. D) Eat the hair. E) None of the above.

A).

5. After lunch, you return to continue your work. What task are you most dreading and/or what task are you most looking forward to?

Preparing for a difficult class with difficult content. (e.g. olympiad module) or new content due to pretty new module (all because of curriculum changes). I also dread having to deal with so many emails each day. I look forward to clear my own work (e.g. marking; preparing for a test; review worksheet question paper etc).

6. This is when you notice a strange letter placed on your desk. You open it and it says: I regret to inform you that you have been fired. Please clear your desk by next week. How do you feel?

Shocked, angry, keen to find out what exactly went wrong. But after a while, i will take it as an opportunity to explore new grounds. I’m certain there are other schools out there that will need my expertise.

7. You turn the letter over… and it says “Just joking! Happy StAR Day! Thank you for all your hard work and the school will not be same without you!” How do you feel?

Whew, a great sigh of relief. HaHa! 😀
