The Rat Race
by Mingzhe
Packing up my bag
Filling it with books
Recalling the concepts
That were taught today
Dragging my feet
Back to my house
Just to immerse myself
In a pile of books again
Scribbling on
my foolscap paper
Filling up the blanks on
My math workbook
Wondering if this contest
Is even worth fighting for
The clock is ticking
My mind is still blank
Like a white piece of paper
Its results unbeknownst
I take out my phone
The wallpaper is my exam schedule
There are a hundred messages
From a group chat, titled “exam preparation”
I regurgitate out the concepts
Of the exam tomorrow
On a piece of paper
Hoping that it will stay fixed in my mind
“Start”
The start of the exam
Students hurriedly scribbled answers
As if a bull is chasing them from behind
My mind is blank
My hands are wet
My body is shivering
My legs are shaking
The end was near
I hope it is
I stare dumbfoundedly
Hopefully it goes well
Discussion arises
Between the different students
On the bus, in the classroom, along the walkways
About the questions of the exam
I chickened out,
Hopefully it is fine
Only thinking about
The freedom that I am getting later
Television,
Games,
Excursion
And most importantly sleep
After a month’s long of exam preparation
A good and relaxing break is refreshing
If you thought it was over
No it isn’t
The most nerve-wracking situation
Is coming up soon
“Script check”
The room is silent
The scripts are returned
The room filled with mixed reactions
Some are cheering
Some are desolate
Some are shocked
Some are contented
But ultimately, it isn’t about the grades
It is about the learning process
Learning from my mistakes
And gaining new knowledge
The grueling year has finally come to an end
The stress caused by the books have also subsided, drastically
One month of relaxation
One month of holiday.
