After a year-long research journey, students from all over Singapore finally presented their final projects at the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) at Big Box on the 7th and 8th of March this year.
Out of a total of more than 700 projects, 340 projects spanning across different fields from microbiology to computer science made it to the finals, where they presented their research to 6 different judges on the first day. The second day was open to the public – all Year 5 and 6 students from NUS High headed down to cheer for their peers before the final awards ceremony. With school flags and cheers prepared, everyone was ready to give the finalists their full support.
NUS High students did the school proud by winning a total of 19 awards, with 4 merits, 4 bronzes, 6 silvers, 4 golds and 1 special award. The Merit, Bronze and Silver awards were given to the awardees at their own booths, where they received plaques in recognition of their achievements. The Gold and Special Awards were announced and presented on stage. For every award, NUS High students cheered “NUS High, As One!” and waved the flags excitedly to showcase our school spirit and pride!
A project by one of the gold award recipients, Russell Yang Qi Xun, entitled “Topological Analysis of Circuit Laplacians and An Experimental Verification of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Topoelectrical Circuit “ was also selected to represent Singapore in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held in Pennsylvania, United States later this year.
To quote Dr Chiam Sher-Yi, “It’s obvious there is some disappointment with the SSEF results. Some wished they had won an award, those who won wished they had done better. I am proud of the effort you have made and the spirit you displayed at the awards presentation. The SSEF will be no more than a minor speed bump in your life, there is lots more research to do, more things to discover, innovations to made, food to eat and movies to watch.” Congratulations to all awardees and finalists in SSEF this year and we hope you had a great time!
